Motion Sickness Facts and Information

  1. Motion sickness, sea sickness and altitude sickness fact: according to a recent survey, 40% of adult travelers and 50% of children 2-12 experienced motion sickness during travel.

  2. Motion sickness is nausea and dizziness that occurs when traveling in a moving vehicle such as a car, boat, or airplane.

  3. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness focus on the horizon.

  4. Motion sickness is common and normal. Nearly anyone can be made motion sick by an appropriate stimulus, except for individuals with no vestibular system.

  5. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; try to stay in fresh air

  6. Take steps to prevent motion sickness, seasickness, or altitude sickness before your next trip. Avoid reading while traveling, Focus on the view outside, Be the driver; the one in control is less likely to experience motion sickness, Get plenty of fresh air, Avoid eating or drinking heavily, Look for a seat or cabin near the center of the vehicle, where it moves the least.

  8. Motion sickness or seasickness is usually just a minor annoyance and does not signify any serious medical illness, but some travelers are incapacitated by it, and a few even suffer symptoms for a few days after the trip.

  9. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Do not eat greasy or acidic foods for several hours before a dive. This includes having coffee before diving. You don't want to have a lot of acid or heavy, slow to digest foods rolling around in your stomach while you are rolling around on the sea. Heavy, greasy foods like bacon and eggs, sausage, waffles or pancakes with syrup, alone or combined with acidic juices like orange juice, can wreak havoc on your system and end up recycled as lunch for fishes. Consider less acidic fruits (apples, bananas, pears, grapes, melons, etc.), breads (muffins, croissants, rolls), cereals and grains as alternatives. Milk, water, apple juice, cranberry juice and other low acid beverages are gentler alternatives to orange juice or grapefruit juice.
