Motion Sickness Facts
and Information
-
Motion sickness, seasickness and altitude sickness happen when signals from the balance system of your body conflict with visual cues. For example, your body may sense rolling motions that you cannot see from inside a ship's cabin. Conversely, during a "virtual reality" simulation, your eyes perceive movement that your body does not experience. In addition, the structures of your inner ears can become unbalanced.

Beer for motion sickness or sea sickness: Beer initially may keep you well hydrated and also has a sedating effect (not many people have nausea or vomiting while asleep). But the bad effect is that it may eventually cause dehydration. Remember drinking beer may eventually make you pee like a racehorse.
-
Air sickness is more problematic for motion sickness, however. An outside view doesn't necessarily help in aviation, because flight constantly presents sensory conflicts. During a coordinated turn, for example, our eyes show a tilted horizon while our vestibular sense says we're perfectly upright. Uncoordinated maneuvers and turbulence provide even more complex conflicts. In a cloud, we may receive all sorts of vestibular sensations while our eyes report a featureless, horizon less void.

The movement of a boat on a fluid sea creates stress in the portions of the brain responsible for balance. Perhaps that stress causes the brain to start malfunctioning as the land based environment it understands is suddenly not behaving, as it should.
