Motion Sickness Facts and Information

  1. Techniques to reduce motion sickness, seasickness, and altitude sickness: Position yourself for the least movement, The lesser the movement while traveling the better, this means asking the driver to slow down while in either a car or bus, sitting near the middle of an airplane or boat. Try and watch the horizon when you are on a boat and get plenty of fresh air even if it's very cold. When in a car try and sit in the front seat looking straight ahead, if you are old enough, drive the car.

  2. Ginger is a natural preventative for motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness. It soothes a queasy stomach and has no side effects. You can get it in pill form, tablets or powder, as ginger root in many herb and health food stores, or as pickled ginger slices at Japanese food marts and even at many Japanese restaurants. Most serve it pickled with sushi, hand rolls, and other of their dishes.

  3. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness keep each other occupied and do not think about getting sick.

  4. Snacks or crackers a little and often during the trip will also help to reduce motion sickness.

  5. What Causes Motion Sickness, Seasickness or Altitude Sickness: In order for the body to determine where it is at all times, the brain combines visual information, touch information, inner ear information, and internal expectations. Under most circumstances, the senses and expectations agree. When they disagree, there is conflict, and motion sickness can occur.

  6. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Get plenty of rest before diving. Weariness and exhaustion can make you more susceptible to other things that can bring on motion sickness. Do your gear preparation early the day before diving and take care of other business well before a proper bed time.

  7. Motion sickness or seasickness is usually just a minor annoyance and does not signify any serious medical illness, but some travelers are incapacitated by it, and a few even suffer symptoms for a few days after the trip.

  8. Some people experience nausea and even vomiting when riding in an airplane, automobile, or amusement park ride, and this is called motion sickness. Many people experience motion sickness when riding on a boat or ship, and this is called seasickness even though it is the same disorder.

  9. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Have some water and fruit before and between dives. It can help by re-hydrating you.
