Motion Sickness Facts and Information

  1. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; Avoid spicy or greasy food/citrus juices/sod

  2. Acupressure wrist bands put pressure on the point called P6. Many people claim it works. It may in some individuals. How it works is unknown; however the Chinese state it works by balancing the ying and yang of your body.

  3. What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Conflicting Messages, One message or signal comes from the middle (or inner) ear that controls balance and the other message comes from the eyes. During changes in position caused by travel these two signals conflict or disagree. Or seen another way, reading a book the view remains stable while the body is twisted and turned during travel. These two signals end up at the nausea center of the brain and with such confusion is it a surprise that motion sickness is the result.

  4. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; if you're not sure you are prone to seasickness, try reading a newspaper while in a moving car. If you have no problem with that, the chances are you should have no problem with ships either.

  5. Motion sickness drugs, available over the counter or by prescription, can cause unpleasant and sometimes serious side effects. Many of these drugs may not be suitable for children or, in certain circumstances, even for adults.

  6. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness focus on the horizon.

  7. To prevent motion sickness or sea sickness or altitude sickness: Take one of the varieties of motion sickness medicines before your travel begins, as recommended by your physician.

  8. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: In the car: sit in the front seat or drive.

  9. To reduce the effect of motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness avoids alcohol and caffeine. If you have respiratory problems, eliminate foods that produce inflammation and mucus, such as dairy products, fruit, and sugar. Ginger sliced and chewed may prevent the onset of motion sickness. Encapsulated ginger, crystallized ginger, or ginger snaps may also help. Ginger has been shown to be more effective than antihistamines if taken one hour before traveling. Sips of lemon water may help relieve nausea during an episode.

  10. Snacks or crackers a little and often during the trip will also help to reduce motion sickness.
