Motion Sickness Facts and Information

  1. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; Ship doctors usually stock medications

  2. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness on a boat, stay on deck and avoid going below deck while underway.

  3. Techniques to reduce motion sickness, seasickness, and altitude sickness: The Night before the trip, Lack of sleep, hangovers and upset stomachs are wrong way to start a trip and to avoid motion sickness. Therefore careful eating the 24 hours before the trip is wise and will help to reduce the chance of motion sickness. Therefore avoid a heavy and or fatty meal, one with lots of spices, chicken and fish or anything that is old or a little suspect, like takeaway foods late at night.

  4. Acupressure may reduce symptoms of sea sickness. Use "Sea Bands" as commercially available.

  5. To prevent motion sickness or sea sickness or altitude sickness: Do not read while traveling if you are subject to motion sickness, and do not sit in a seat facing backward.

  6. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; Eat frequent small quantities of soda crackers

  7. Trip ease may be taken with any other medication. Like other homeopathic remedies, trip ease is most effective when taken separately from food and drink, but has been specially formulated so that it may if necessary be taken in association with food and/or drink, i.e. coffee.

  8. There are essentially three strategies to treatment of motion sickness: Behavioral (avoidance, mental activities), Medication (conventional, alternative), Stimulation (alternative)

To help motion sickness always ride where your eyes will see the same motion that your body and inner ears feel, e.g. sit in the front seat of the car and look at the distant scenery; go up on the deck of the ship and watch the horizon; sit by the window of the airplane and look outside. In an airplane choose a seat over the wings where the motion is the least.

  10. Ginger is a natural preventative for motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness. It soothes a queasy stomach and has no side effects. You can get it in pill form, tablets or powder, as ginger root in many herb and health food stores, or as pickled ginger slices at Japanese food marts and even at many Japanese restaurants. Most serve it pickled with sushi, hand rolls, and other of their dishes.
