Motion Sickness Facts and Information

  1. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Avoid gasoline or diesel fumes. They can put you over the edge literally and figuratively. Stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible. Avoid becoming overheated and dehydrated.

  2. Acupressure may reduce symptoms of sea sickness. Use "Sea Bands" as commercially available.

  3. Natural ginger for motion or sea sickness. There is medical evidence that this does indeed help relieve N/V. How it works is also not known. Ginger extract can be found in most health food stores.

  4. Motion sickness is the nausea, disorientation and fatigue that can be induced by head motion. The first sign is usually pallor. Yawning, restlessness and a cold sweat forming on the upper lip or forehead often follow. As symptoms build, an upset stomach, fatigue or drowsiness may occur. The final stages are characterized by nausea and vomiting.

  5. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Eat bland foods -- crackers and bread, or bananas rice, applesauce and toast.

  6. Take steps to prevent motion sickness, seasickness, or altitude sickness before your next trip. Avoid reading while traveling, Focus on the view outside, Be the driver; the one in control is less likely to experience motion sickness, Get plenty of fresh air, Avoid eating or drinking heavily, Look for a seat or cabin near the center of the vehicle, where it moves the least.

  7. What Can I Do for Motion Sickness: Do not read while traveling if you are subject to motion sickness, and do not sit in a seat facing backward.

  8. For motion sickness or sea sickness: If you are beginning to feel a bit queasy, stand up and look out over the horizon. Despite what you might think, sitting or lying down is the worst thing you can do at this point. Don't do it. This is a critical moment. You will get much worse even faster and may reach a point of no return if you make the wrong choice. Soda crackers seem to help some people by calming their stomachs and reducing nausea.

  9. Pilots often report that their family members and other passengers are far more prone to motion sickness than they are.

  10. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: In the car: sit in the front seat or drive.
