Motion Sickness Facts and Information

  1. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness on a boat, stay on deck and avoid going below deck while underway.

  2. There are essentially three strategies to treatment of motion sickness: Behavioral (avoidance, mental activities), Medication (conventional, alternative), Stimulation (alternative)

  3. To prevent motion sickness or sea sickness or altitude sickness: Take one of the varieties of motion sickness medicines before your travel begins, as recommended by your physician.

  4. Motion sickness is nausea and dizziness that occurs when traveling in a moving vehicle such as a car, boat, or airplane.

  5. What Can I Do for Motion Sickness: Do not read while traveling if you are subject to motion sickness, and do not sit in a seat facing backward.

  6. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Aboard a ship: stay toward the middle and look at the horizon. Avoid ship travel if possible. Stay out of small tight places where you can't see the horizon.

  7. Snacks or crackers a little and often during the trip will also help to reduce motion sickness.

  8. What Can I Do for Motion Sickness: Avoid strong odors and spicy or greasy foods that do not agree with you (immediately before and during your travel).

  9. Motion sickness is common and normal. Nearly anyone can be made motion sick by an appropriate stimulus, except for individuals with no vestibular system.

  10. Some divers as being very effective for sea sickness report eating peppermint in conjunction with ginger. Since mint does have some of the same calmative qualities as ginger, this may be true. Perhaps it is just the belief that it works that is effective. Regardless, it is an inexpensive and pleasant addition. An added benefit is making your breath sweeter.
