Motion Sickness Facts and Information

  1. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Do not eat greasy or acidic foods for several hours before a dive. This includes having coffee before diving. You don't want to have a lot of acid or heavy, slow to digest foods rolling around in your stomach while you are rolling around on the sea. Heavy, greasy foods like bacon and eggs, sausage, waffles or pancakes with syrup, alone or combined with acidic juices like orange juice, can wreak havoc on your system and end up recycled as lunch for fishes. Consider less acidic fruits (apples, bananas, pears, grapes, melons, etc.), breads (muffins, croissants, rolls), cereals and grains as alternatives. Milk, water, apple juice, cranberry juice and other low acid beverages are gentler alternatives to orange juice or grapefruit juice.

  2. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: On the airplane: ask for a window seat. The front of the plane may be preferable, as it is usually less noisy.

  3. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness drink as little as possible.

  4. Techniques to reduce motion sickness, seasickness, and altitude sickness: Don't read while traveling, Reading increases the conflict between what the eye sees and what the boat feels which is the cause of motion sickness. So if you suffer from motion sickness do not read while traveling.

  5. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Get plenty of rest before diving. Weariness and exhaustion can make you more susceptible to other things that can bring on motion sickness. Do your gear preparation early the day before diving and take care of other business well before a proper bed time.

  6. What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Pre Trip, Many times the previous 24 hours are the reason for motion sickness not the journey itself. Hangovers, over tiredness, anxiety, minor illnesses all contribute to motion sickness. A heavy meal, full of fat and possibly over spiced does not help either. Too many carbonated and or alcoholic drinks can unsettle your stomach which will make you more sensitive to motion sickness during the journey. Therefore if you are not fit, rested and healthy you will probably suffer more motion sickness than you usually do.

  7. What Causes Motion Sickness, Seasickness or Altitude Sickness: In order for the body to determine where it is at all times, the brain combines visual information, touch information, inner ear information, and internal expectations. Under most circumstances, the senses and expectations agree. When they disagree, there is conflict, and motion sickness can occur.

  8. Seasickness happens when the body, inner ear, and eyes all send different signals to the brain, resulting in confusion and queasiness. It is a problem generally attributed to disturbance in the balance system of the inner ear (vestibular) system. Your sensory perception gets out of synch as these nerve fibers attempt to compensate for the unfamiliar motion of the ship moving through water.

  9. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: In the car: sit in the front seat or drive.
