Motion Sickness Facts and Information

  1. Motion sickness, sea sickness and altitude sickness fact: No side effects including drowsiness.

  2. Some people experience nausea and even vomiting when riding in an airplane, automobile, or amusement park ride, and this is called motion sickness. Many people experience motion sickness when riding on a boat or ship, and this is called sea sickness even though it is the same disorder.

  3. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; Avoid strong odors

  4. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Have some water and fruit before and between dives. It can help by re-hydrating you.

  5. For motion sickness or sea sickness: If you are beginning to feel a bit queasy, stand up and look out over the horizon. Despite what you might think, sitting or lying down is the worst thing you can do at this point. Don't do it. This is a critical moment. You will get much worse even faster and may reach a point of no return if you make the wrong choice. Soda crackers seem to help some people by calming their stomachs and reducing nausea.

  6. If you do get sick, don't despair. Motion sickness generally clears up soon after you stop traveling, and has no long-term complications. Report any unusual side effects from motion-sickness medications to your health care provider.

  7. Another treatment for sea sickness or motion sickness is an acupressure wrist band. It applies pressure to a particular point on your wrist, which can prevent the feeling of nausea.

  8. If you feel nauseous and about to succumb, please avoid the entry and exit areas of the boat. Hang your head over the gunwales and avoid "chumming" in areas other divers must use.

  9. Ginger is a natural preventative for motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness. It soothes a queasy stomach and has no side effects. You can get it in pill form, tablets or powder, as ginger root in many herb and health food stores, or as pickled ginger slices at Japanese food marts and even at many Japanese restaurants. Most serve it pickled with sushi, hand rolls, and other of their dishes.

  10. To reduce the effect of motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness avoids alcohol and caffeine. If you have respiratory problems, eliminate foods that produce inflammation and mucus, such as dairy products, fruit, and sugar. Ginger sliced and chewed may prevent the onset of motion sickness. Encapsulated ginger, crystallized ginger, or ginger snaps may also help. Ginger has been shown to be more effective than antihistamines if taken one hour before traveling. Sips of lemon water may help relieve nausea during an episode.
